The Four Steps of Emergency Care
Emergencies can happen at any time, day or night. Our ER teams work around the clock, always ready to take on patients with urgent medical conditions and injuries. When you or one of your loved ones visits our ER, we will take you through the following process:
1. Triage
Triage is the process of assessing the patient’s conditions, determining its severity and deciding on the best course of action as quickly as possible. Patients with the most severe conditions will always be treated first, which means that other patients, with less severe problems, will be asked to wait. When you arrive, a registered nurse will assess your situation, record your medical history and assign you to a specific treatment priority level.
2. Treatment
An attending physician and other qualified staff members will perform the patient’s treatment with the assistance of ER nurses. A variety of tests may be ordered at this stage to help the physician assess your condition and determine the best treatment.
3. Re-Evaluation
Once the test results come in, your attending physician will reevaluate your condition and consult with you to determine and explain the way forward. You may either be sent home with medication and further instructions, or admitted to hospital, or transferred to the nearest appropriate facility.
4. Discharge
When it is safe for you to leave the hospital, you will be discharged with home-care instructions.
