Emergency Department Expansion Underway at Martin County Hospital District
Construction continues to move forward on a major expansion project at Martin County Hospital District, bringing MCHD closer to significantly increasing Emergency Department capacity while adding new spaces to support inpatient care and recovery.
Construction is underway as MCHD expands Emergency Department capacity while maintaining emergency services throughout the project.
The project includes the Emergency Department Addition & Renovation, new Physical Therapy space for the inpatient side of the hospital, and a Sensory & Recovery Garden. All three components are identified in the project plans.
At the center of the work is a major expansion and renovation of the MCHD Emergency Department, designed to increase capacity and better support the teams who provide emergency care.
Building for the Future of Emergency Care
When complete, the Emergency Department will grow from five treatment rooms to 11, giving MCHD additional capacity to care for patients while providing physicians, nurses, EMS professionals, and other members of the emergency care team with more space to work.
Construction began this summer and is expected to continue through 2027.
More Than Additional Treatment Rooms
The project goes beyond simply increasing the number of rooms. Plans for the expanded Emergency Department include a combination of new and renovated clinical and support spaces designed around the different needs of emergency patients.
The plans include dedicated treatment rooms and trauma rooms, along with triage and pre-triage areas to support patient assessment as individuals enter the Emergency Department.
The project also incorporates a decontamination area, nurse’s station, medication work area, storage, staff areas, and other spaces that support the day-to-day operation of the Emergency Department.
Together, these improvements will give MCHD greater capacity and additional resources to respond to emergency healthcare needs across the region.
Supporting Inpatient Recovery
The project also includes new Physical Therapy space for the inpatient side of the hospital.
This addition will provide dedicated space to support mobility, rehabilitation, and recovery for patients during their hospital stay.
The inpatient PT addition is located immediately north of the Emergency Department project and adjacent to the planned Sensory & Recovery Garden on the overall campus plan.
A Sensory & Recovery Garden
A new Sensory & Recovery Garden is also included as part of the project.
Located next to the inpatient Physical Therapy addition, the garden will add an outdoor space to the hospital campus designed to complement the recovery environment.
The garden, inpatient PT addition, and Emergency Department expansion are shown together in the project plans as interconnected improvements on the east side of the existing hospital.
One Project, Multiple Areas of Growth
Together, the Emergency Department expansion, inpatient Physical Therapy addition, and Sensory & Recovery Garden represent a significant investment in the next phase of the MCHD campus.
The largest component remains the expansion of emergency care capacity, but the overall project also recognizes that patient care doesn’t end when the immediate emergency is over.
New spaces supporting inpatient mobility and recovery will complement the expanded Emergency Department as MCHD continues investing in the facilities needed to care for the community now and in the years ahead.

Construction While Care Continues
Throughout construction, the MCHD Emergency Department remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Patients and visitors may continue to see temporary changes to entrances, parking, and traffic patterns around the Emergency Department as work progresses.
MCHD appreciates the patience of patients, visitors, employees, and community members as crews continue working around an active hospital and Emergency Department.
