Martin County Hospital District is proud to recognize Mirabel Phillips of Dietary as the March Employee of the Month for going above and beyond to create a special moment for a patient.
A simple act of kindness can make a lasting difference in a patient’s experience. When a nurse contacted Dietary on a Saturday to ask if they could help celebrate a patient’s birthday, Mirabel took the request a step further.
She prepared a dessert, wrote “Happy Birthday” on the plate in chocolate, delivered it to the patient and even sang happy birthday. The thoughtful surprise brought an immediate smile to the patient’s face and turned an ordinary hospital day into something worth remembering.
Healthcare is made up of countless interactions, and sometimes the moments patients remember most are the ones that aren’t part of a treatment plan.
Mirabel saw an opportunity to make someone’s day better and took it. What began as a request for a birthday dessert became a personal celebration that showed the patient they were seen, remembered and cared for.
Excellent patient care extends beyond clinical treatment. Every department and every employee has an opportunity to shape how patients feel during their time at Martin County Hospital District.
Mirabel’s actions are a reminder that compassion can be expressed in simple ways. A decorated dessert, a birthday song and a few extra minutes of someone’s time may seem small, but to a patient spending their birthday away from home, they can mean much more.
